AMD has launched its competitor to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card.

The Radeon RX Vega 64 is based on AMD’s Vega GPU architecture and is the company’s first high-end consumer GPU to compete with Nvidia’s Pascal card lineup.

The RX Vega 64 is available in air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations, and sports HBM2 memory – which allows for greater memory bandwidth than previous generations.

The specifications of the air-cooled RX Vega 64 and the GeForce GTX 1080 are compared below.

It should be noted that while the peak compute figure provides a view of operations per second, it does not always tie in with gaming performance.

Performance Benchmarks

We took benchmark data from AnandTech to compare the performance of the RX Vega 64 against the GeForce GTX 1080.

The table below shows the frames-per-second delivered by the reference, air-cooled model of each card at a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160.

Architecture

AMD’s RX Vega 64 manages to edge out a victory in average FPS scores, although it is apparent this varies depending on the title.

Per-game performance can depend on numerous factors, including rendering engine, graphics API, and in-game implementation of either AMD’s GPUOpen or Nvidia’s GameWorks technologies.

AMD’s Vega products feature a similar design to its previous-generation Fiji graphics cards, but include a number of new technologies.

The architecture boasts an improved geometry engine, HBM2 memory, a high-bandwidth cache controller, and double-rate FP16 math.

Radeon RX Vega graphics cards will therefore be well-suited to games or other performance-heavy tasks which utilise this technology.

 

Pricing

AMD’s Radeon RX Vega 64 is priced at $499 in the US, the same recommended retail price as Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080.

The GeForce GTX 1080 starts at around R9,200 in South Africa, although it is not know what AMD’s Vega graphics cards will cost when they launch locally.

Wootware has listed the RX Vega 64 in its online store, but no pricing was shown at the time of writing.

 

The AMD cards are expected to be available from early September.
